Every dollar donated to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent equates to three meals for families in need in the Crossroads.

Formosa Plastics has donated $2 million dollars to the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent to offset the record high demand of food in our area since the COVID-19 pandemic.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Executive Director of the FBGC, Robin Cradle is still in awe over the donation. " It's amazing, truly amazing that a company cares about their community the way Formosa does." Robin offers. " The money has been specifically earmarked for food and food only, so we will able to provide 6 million meals to 6 counties in the weeks ahead. "

The 2 million dollar donation will be distributed to Calhoun, Jackson, Matagorda, Refugio, Wharton and Victoria county.

" Have you ever visited the Formosa website?" Robin asks. " They do so much, more than I ever thought," she adds. In fact, Jack Wu the VP of Formosa's Point Comfort plant approached the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent first asking Robin, " What would you do with 2 million dollars?" Robin was beyond elated and beyond grateful.

"Typically we provide 5 million meals a year in the Crossroads, but from April to May of this year, we provided 1 million meals for that month alone," Robin says.

In June? "3.5 million meals." Robin offers.

Wow.

" We are seeing a steady 58 to 64 percent increase in need since COVID. People who have never had to rely on a food pantry are doing so now."

Robin attributes the higher need of food services to quarantine, food shortages and job loss as well as the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent delivering meals to families who are in isolation due to being stricken by the disease.

Still, the Formosa donation has a huge impact on the FBGC as the FBGC continuse to grow, expanding to their new location, of 36,000 square feet at 801 South Laurent which will provide over 6,000 square feet in much needed refrigeration space.
