Seven San Antonio police officers were injured Wednesday night while responding to a call about a “suicide in progress.”

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos, was later found dead after a standoff lasting several hours.

What Happened?

  • Around 8:30 p.m., officers arrived at an apartment on Stone Oak Parkway after receiving a call about a potential suicide.
  • A second call came in reporting gunfire.

When police arrived, a woman ran out of the apartment and told them Poulos was inside, actively shooting.

Then, he came out firing.

One officer was struck in the leg. Poulos retreated inside, and when additional officers tried to approach, he fired again, injuring six more.

All of the injured officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover. They have between four and eight years of experience with the department.

SWAT Team Called In

The SWAT team was called in and nearby apartments were evacuated as negotiations took place. Poulos remained inside the apartment for several hours before he was found dead. It has not been determined whether his death was self-inflicted or caused by SWAT gunfire.

“At the end of the event, the suspect was found to be deceased,” Chief McManus said. “We don’t know if he was shot by a self-inflicted wound or whether or not he was shot by SWAT officers.”

According to police, Poulos had been arrested on January 18 for violating a protection order and other violent offenses but was released on bail the following day.

The investigation is ongoing.
