Texas A&M Looks to Take Over University of Houston Victoria Spot
The idea of the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) becoming part of the Texas A&M system has sparked plenty of discussion, but it's not as simple as just switching the name.
Unlike private universities that operate independently, both UHV and Texas A&M are public institutions funded by the state. That means any major change, like a university shifting from one system to another, requires legislative approval.
This isn't the first time TAMU has sparked interest in Victoria. However, at the time, the idea wasn't supported by the University of Houston System. This time around seems to be different.
SUPPORT RISES FOR THE UNIVERSITY TRANSITION
“With the proposed transfer of the University of Houston-Victoria to the Texas A&M University System, we recognize that the academic programs offered by the TAMU System, specifically in the areas of agribusiness and agricultural economics, may be better aligned to support the Victoria region’s economic growth and local workforce needs.” Shawn Lindsey, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications explained.
The Texas A&M transition would offer new types of degrees the area thrives on that are currently not offered.
"The transition to the Texas A&M System will provide our university with increased access to the resources and support it needs to thrive for decades to come... engineering and agriculture, neither of which are being offered at our university at this time," Victoria Mayor Duane Crocker said in a press release.
On a local level, community leaders express their support for the shift.
“Texas A&M agribusiness offerings are incredible and known throughout the world, so I cannot tell you how beneficial this could be not only for Victoria but for the state of Texas,” state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst said in an interview.
