Victoria City Employees Help Distribute Food to 180 Families

Early Monday morning, cars lined up at F.W. Gross Elementary School for the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent's drive-up food distribution event.

More than a dozen City of Victoria employees volunteered as they delivered over a total of 33,677 pounds of food, providing meals to over 180 families.

As I passed, cars were lined down the block leading out to Glass Street. Multiple families and almost every vehicle had their doors unlocked or trunks open to receive their items from familiar faces such as Victoria Police Department Interim Chief Mark Jameson.

After the decision was made by the district to permanently close F.W. Gross Elementary in late May I was shocked. I pass by the campus at least twice a day and became used to seeing the life inside the building, so it was heartwarming to see it still being used to provide to the students who used to attend the campus.

The mission of the Food Bank of The Golden Crescent is to “help heal the hurt of hunger,” and they provide support to Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio, Wharton, Matagorda, and Victoria counties.

In 2019 alone, the Food Bank distributed over 5 million pounds of food, providing 4.6 million meals to individuals throughout these counties.

Seeing these individuals involved within the city office dedicate their time to helping out in the community brings a sense of pride to me as a native Victorian, and I hope events like this continue to make a change they were meant to.
