Is There an Age Limit for Trick-or-Treating in Texas?
Halloween is my favorite time of year. On October 31st, I put on a costume and head out with my daughter to go door-to-door. It’s nostalgic, but am I technically breaking the law?
Is there an age limit for trick-or-treating in Texas?
The short answer: no. Texas doesn’t have a law that says you’re too old to trick-or-treat. No officer is hiding in the bushes ready to card you for a fun-size candy bar. You can be 6, 16, or 36 and still go out door-to-door hunting for candy.
That said, the unofficial rule is more about how you act than how old you are. If you’re respectful, dressed up, and not being obnoxious, most people will hand you candy without a second thought. Some neighbors love seeing older kids and parents still in the spirit.

Most Texas cities don’t set curfews either, but trick-or-treating usually winds down around 8 p.m. That’s when the porch lights flip off and the candy bowl’s nothing but Tootsie Rolls, which oddly enough, my daughter loves.
So if you're an adult who never grew up, like me, congrats, we're not breaking any laws! Just don’t be the person who shows up without a costume or snatches candy from a six-year-old. I'll continue to tag along with my kid until she bans me.
If you want to start trick-or-treating early this year, join us at the Victoria Community Center on Wednesday, October 22, from 5-9! The dome will be packed with candy booths, costume contests, and a few steps away, the annex will transform into a haunted house.
