If you have Facebook, you've probably seen one of your friends claiming to have earned a $100 gift card from Kohl's just for taking a survey. Don't believe it.

It would be easy to mistake this for a legitimate offer, but it couldn't be further from the truth. The claim originates from a site with the URL 'rewardnow.pw', shares on behalf of your Facebook friends, and redirects the user to a site that looks branded by Kohl's—but it's definitely not a Kohl's site.

The site asks users to enter personal information such as telephone numbers, email addresses, date of birth, and sometimes even credit card or banking information. No legitimate site would ask for this information on a customer survey.

Kohl's took to its Facebook page to deny any affiliation with the offer:

We are aware of the gift card promotion. However, we are not affiliated with this third party site. We apologize for the confusion.

Unfortunately, more than six million Facebook users have fallen victim to the scam.

The Better Business Bureau offers the following tips to identify similar scams:

  • Don’t believe what you see. It’s easy to steal the colors, logos and header of an established organization. Scammers can also make links look like they lead to legitimate websites and emails appear to come from a different sender.
  • Legitimate businesses do not ask for credit card numbers or banking information on customer surveys. If they do ask for personal information, like an address or email, be sure there’s a link to their privacy policy.
  • When in doubt, do a quick Web search. If the survey is a scam, you may find alerts or complaints from other consumers. The organization’s real website may have further information.
  • Watch out for a reward that’s too good to be true. If the survey is real, you may be entered in a drawing to win a gift card or receive a small discount off your next purchase. Few businesses can afford to give away $50 gift cards for completing a few questions.

Remember, if it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is.
