Tuesday morning Texas was hit with freezing cold temperatures, something many of the most fragile population were not fully prepared for.

In Houston, a homeless man was found dead at a Houston bus stop. Officials confirmed the man had died due to the cold weather.

UNUSUALLY COLD IN TEXAS

The weather dipped into freezing temperatures overnight across Texas. During the recent Arctic blast, South Texas experienced unusually cold temperatures. Notably:

Dallas: The temperature dropped to approximately 21°F (-6.1°C).

Houston: Experienced lows around 28°F (-2.2°C).

San Antonio: Recorded a low near 33°F (0.6°C).

Austin: Saw temperatures dip to about 28°F (-2.2°C).

El Paso: Experienced lows around 33°F (0.6°C).

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued a Weather Watch from January 6-10 due to the predicted cold weather which will trigger higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves; which we know can end in destruction, like back in 2021 with Winter Storm Uri.

Back in 2021, Winter Storm Uri directly and indirectly killed more than 245 people. Due to rolling blackouts and a meltdown of ERCOT, many lives were at stake.

WHAT TO EXPECT THIS WINTER

The Farmers' Almanac's extended forecast for 2024-2025 anticipates a "Wet Winter Whirlwind," including frequent storms producing significant precipitation across the United States.

For Texas specifically, the forecast suggests:

  • Precipitation: The state may experience a few inches of snow in early February, with heavy precipitation and strong winds expected in late January.
  • Temperature: Generally moderate temperatures are anticipated, though occasional frigid blasts are possible.
