Everyone talks about wanting to “go viral,” but this week it actually happened to one of my good friends, completely by accident, during a comedy show in San Antonio. More than a million people have now seen my hilarious, socially awkward friend Kat unexpectedly steal the spotlight.
During a recent show at Riot Riverwalk Comedy Club in San Antonio, Jeremiah Watkins, whose stand-up has landed on Netflix, Prime Video, and other major platforms, was working the crowd when he spotted a former Victoria local in the audience and unknowingly set the stage for the rest of the night.
Watkins spotted Kat Parr and her friend in the audience and casually referred to them as “a couple of dudes.” Kat nodded along and laughed, but corrected him by saying, “I’m not a dude.”

Here’s where things took a hard left.

Watkins leaned in, the crowd perked up, and the moment quickly snowballed into what he later titled “Misgendered.” He started grilling the pair, asking if they were a couple, which is when the crowd went wild. At the same time, the two responded, but with very different answers. The guy says, “We’re just friends,” meanwhile, Kat confidently blurts out, “We’re a couple.

The crowd erupted in laughter, and Watkins was frozen in shock, clearly trying to process what just happened. From there, the show took off, with Watkins losing it alongside the audience as the moment turned into full-blown comedic gold.
What made it even wilder? Kat is very much is not into men, which made her answer land even harder once the context was set. After the clip started circulating, curiosity kicked in, and I needed to find out what everyone was wondering: Did she seriously think they were a couple?

Kathleen says the move was strategic.

“I didn’t want them to make fun of me more for being gay,” she explained. “So I tried to make a joke about our friendship and toy with how the crowd already viewed us as weird for being friends, lol.”

She also wanted to clear up a couple of things:

  1. “I’m still not a dude,” she said.
  2. “And I don’t date men.”
The rest of the set rolled on, the crowd stayed rowdy, and Watkins fully embraced the derailment, even naming the set “Misgenedered.”
